This extended enquiry uses the Crusades to focus on historical interpretations.
By the end of this 2 phase enquiry, your students will be able to explain why historians disagree over the Crusades. They will also be able to place these arguments into the context of the time they were written, and within the wider trends in historiography.
This first lesson defines what the Crusades were and allows your students to see how the Crusaders can be seen as positive and negative.
They are then introduced to two interpretations and establish what they say and consider why they give the view that they do.
Your students finish by being introduced to the classic work of Steven Runciman, one of the first western historians to criticise the Crusaders. They will return to his work in lesson 2.
