This lesson focuses on one of the most important themes of the medieval period.
It looks at religion, and the development of both Christianity and Islam as popular faith systems.
Students are presented with a question: did increasing conflict between Christians and Muslims lead to inevitable conflict and violence, or was the reality somewhat more complicated?
Seeking to answer this question, students consider a range of evidence, deciding whether the evidence indicates cooperation or conflict between followers of the two religions.
A ‘treasure hunt’ encourages students to think more deeply about what the evidence suggests to them, and a final activity gives them the chance to reach nuanced conclusions in response to the enquiry question.
