This enquiry develops students’ understanding of the consequences of westward expansion.
It focuses on the ways in which the extension of the railroads (and other factors) facilitated the growth of the cattle industry.
Students are presented with an historian’s interpretation, and then use a passage of text to test the accuracy of the historian’s argument.
In the enquiry, students practise the invaluable skill of interpreting and summarising an extended passage of writing.
Having extracted information from the text, students evaluate the evidence to explain how important different factors were in the development of the cattle industry. Then, they have the opportunity to present their findings in alternative ways: either as a written response, or in the form of a pie-chart. Don’t ever say we don’t spoil the students!!
