Great history lessons often challenge students to ‘beat the expert’. This investigation helps students understand the various responsibilities of a 16th Century monarch (post Break with Rome) before introducing the challenges and opportunities facing Elizabeth when she became queen in 1558.
Students are encouraged to think about the level of threat posed by the problems facing Elizabeth before using their knowledge to critique a BBC webpage from the iWonder site.
The information gathering part of the lesson can be run as a carousel or a home / expert set up if you prefer. More challenging classes or those requiring more support can do just as well in small groups or pairs.
The teacher then drip feeds the information with guidance and at an appropriate pace. There is a choice of end tasks depending on the needs of the students. Sometimes GCSE lessons can become death by exam question and therefore we have offered up an alternative.
