This enquiry focuses on local policing in the 19th century.
It sees students encounter an historian’s interpretation about the effectiveness of local policing.
David Taylor argues that local policing was characterised by a ‘limited degree of progress’.
Having come up with some criteria to judge ‘progress’, students then study a range of clues relating to the Sussex police force in the 19th century, deciding whether this criteria for ‘progress’ was met.
Finally, they are in a position to write a letter to the historian, explaining how accurate his argument is.
