History Resource Cupboard - lessons and resources for schools

8. How accurately does Eisenstein’s film depict the events of 1242?

This lesson focuses on a key event in the history of Kievan Rus.

Namely the attempted invasion in 1241 of the Teutonic knights, who were on a crusade to convert as many parts of the world as they could to Catholicism.

Students use an interpretation:  Sergei Eisenstein’s famous film, Alexander Nevsky – to find out more about the Teutonic knights’ invasion.

Having worked as a class to match up scenes from the film with the correct captions (and then organised these scenes into chronological order), students are challenged to work out how accurate this interpretation is, by cross-referencing it with a series of clues.

Finally, students must write ‘blurbs’ to accompany the film’s re-release on Netflix, explaining their findings about the accuracy of this historical interpretation of events.

A really engaging lesson that helps to develop both historical knowledge and interpretations skills.
