3. How did the experiences of Jewish people change during the medieval period?

This lesson serves as an introduction to a new unit.

Taken as a whole, this unit focuses on the experiences of various ‘outsiders’ in medieval England.

Here, students look atJewish settlers, and they chart the highs and lows in the treatment of Jewish people from 1066 (when William invited Jewish merchants to England) to 1290, when the Jews were officially expelled from the country.

Students get to know four individuals who actually lived during these major changes.

These personal stories help to develop their understanding of the ways in which broad social attitudes impacted on ordinary Jewish men and women.

There is an opportunity for parallels to be teased out between the experiences of Jews in medieval England and the experiences of Jews in Nazi Germany – an activity which underlines the horrific prejudice and violence that Jews have long been subjected to.

Finally, students use the knowledge they have acquired in the lesson to tell the ‘story’ of Jews in medieval England.
