This written assessment gives your year 7 classes the chance to encounter historical scholarship straight away.
First, students are introduced to the idea of a ‘time traveller’s guide’, as they read a short extract from Ian Mortimer’s Time Traveller’s Guide to Medieval England (2012).
Then, they use the knowledge they have gained throughout the six lessons of the unit to ‘continue the story’.
With the support of sentence starters, they are challenged to describe religious beliefs, the nature of kingship and authority, trade, knowledge of Europe and the wider world, global disasters, and aspects of ordinary people’s lives.
In all, this engaging assessment encourages students to write effectively, using thoughtful and descriptive language – as well as writing good History.
This is a great introduction to written assessment for year 7 students, with everything set up and ready for you to use.
Students can use criteria to help focus their work, and you can draw upon this criteria, too, in providing formative feedback within the space provided on the worksheet.
