This lesson builds on the previous enquiries in the unit by exploring the contributions made by early English explorers.
The second-order concept focus is on similarity and difference.
Students work towards being able to compare the strengths and weaknesses of the Spanish and English ‘empires’ in the 16th and 17th centuries.
The main activity is a card sort, where students are challenged to match up cards that tell the ‘story’ of the changes brought about by early English sailors.
They select the right ‘caption’ cards to reflect the story in the cards.
Having analysed the extent of English success in a number of key areas, students study an extract from a letter written by Francis Drake.
In his letter to Queen Elizabeth I, Drake claimed that the English had made great advances in their overseas voyages.
Students’ end task is to put themselves in Elizabeth’s shoes, responding to Drake’s (rather exaggerated) claims – perhaps taking him down a peg or two, and underlining how far ahead the Spanish really were!
