This lesson introduces students to the ‘rollercoaster’ of religious change that took place under the Tudor monarchs.
It serves as a foundation for the next couple of lessons in this unit.
Students are challenged first to organise key information about the approaches of the different Tudor monarchs into chronological order.
Next they create graphs or ‘rollercoasters’ on their desks out of the cards they have. They raise the cards higher or lower depending on how ‘Catholic’ or ‘Protestant’ the monarchs’ policies appear to have been.
Then, students are introduced to six characters from the Tudor period. You ask them to speculate about the impact that the religious changes might have had on these people. This is a great way of injecting some ‘similarity and difference‘ into your lessons.
Finally, they are in a good position to ‘knock down’ a wall of misconceptions about Tudor religious policy, showing off some of their new knowledge of this dramatic, unpredictable time.
The lesson is centred around the second-order concept of change, and really helps to develop students’ arsenal of ‘change’ language.
It encourages them to verbalise the ways in which ordinary people’s lives might have improved or worsened as a result of the ‘big’ policies introduced by the powerful Tudors.
