History Resource Cupboard - lessons and resources for schools

7. How did voyages of exploration help map the world?

This lesson offers an exciting opportunity for students to find out more about six of the major ‘voyages of discovery’ that were undertaken in the period 1500-1900.

They are challenged to identify ways in which these voyages helped to identify new routes, gain new riches, and forge new relationships overseas.

Once students have got to grips with the aims and outcomes of the voyages, they plot the voyages’ routes on to a map.

This is a task which helps to underline the truly impressive feats of engineering (and sheer determination) that these voyages represented!

Various discussion-based tasks give students the chance to reflect on the significance of the voyages, before students are tasked with writing letters to their favourite early modern explorer, explaining just why we should thank this traveller for the risky voyage he undertook so many years ago!
