This lesson takes the form of a game of ‘Snakes and Ladders’, although the game has been adapted for historical purposes!
Students are challenged to take on the role of a key individual from the period 1500-1900, to try to increase their power and influence in society – and ultimately win the game.
The engaging format sees students assigned to one of five character roles (a wealthy landowner, a Catholic priest, an ordinary farming woman, a feminist, and a man of science).
They play as this individual, trying to gain points and move forward on the game board. A series of potential pitfalls stand in their way, representing some of the difficulties and challenges that these types of people might have faced during the years 1500-1900.
Ultimately, the game serves to increase students’ understanding of the changing nature of ‘power’ in the early modern and industrial periods, as they come to understand the impact that various events and circumstances had on the power and influence wielded by these different groups.
