History Resource Cupboard - lessons and resources for schools

10. How did Ivan the Terrible consolidate power in Muscovy?

This lesson is the final in a series of eight lessons on Kievan Rus/Muscovy, and focuses on one of the better-known figures associated with this period of Russian history: Ivan the Terrible.

Students are first introduced to two contrasting interpretations of Ivan, and they are challenged to work out what the writers of the interpretations had to say about the ways in which Ivan consolidated power in Muscovy.

Then, students consider a range of clues, determining which of the two interpretations is best supported by the evidence.

The lesson helps students to develop their ability to respond in an evidence-informed manner to historical interpretations – and it also gets them to practise their writing, as the end task sees them compose plaques to accompany a recent statue of Ivan, explaining how they think this famous historical figure ought to be remembered.
