This enquiry aims to develop students’ knowledge of the consequences of the Norman Conquest for ordinary Anglo-Saxons.
It focuses on the dramatic impact of the Harrying of the North.
It also hones in on the historical skill of consequence, equipping students with various ways that they might judge the impact of different events in the past.
Information about the difference consequences of the Harrying of the North is organised first into short-term and long-term; students then consider the impact of this event on ordinary people’s lives; and finally, they consider the positive and negative consequences for William himself.
With very little writing required of them, students are freed up to do some high-level thinking throughout the enquiry.
Finally, they are tasked with responding to an interpretation (‘The Harrying of the North was a disaster for the people of England, but a complete success for William the Conqueror’), drawing on evidence to formulate sophisticated answers.
