This enquiry focuses on a new group of migrants to Britain in the 18th and 19th century: ‘internal migrants’ or those who came to England from other places within the British Isles.
Students find out more about the varied reasons for this migration, which included the disastrous potato famine in Ireland, the Highland Clearances in Scotland, and the opportunities for relief and support provided by the introduction of the English Poor Law system.
Then, students place themselves ‘in the shoes’ of an Irish migrant, using their new knowledge to write letters ‘home’ to Ireland outlining their experiences of migration.
The enquiry ends with some valuable exam-question practice, as students piece together the components of an effective response to a 12-mark question.
