If you are going to get your classes to really understand the Cold War, they need to know how the two sides were diametrically opposed politically and economically. This enquiry does just that.
Starting with a classic image of US and Soviet soldiers shaking hands with each other in Berlin and then contrasting this with a cartoon of Kennedy and Khrushchev ‘arm-wrestling’, you will get this point across.
Next your students will need to work out exactly what the differences were. They will do this by analysing and recording lots of disparate information.
To check their learning you could get the hoola hoops out. Why not try it? The information for sorting is provided here on A4 sheets.
