Room 2 of the National Portrait Gallery is a real treat for any Tudor history fan.
Alongside the monarchs sit impressive portraits of Walter Raleigh and Francis Drake. Recently, the NPG revealed there is about to be a major rehang.
Such an event necessitates debate about which portraits should go and which should remain.
Here you get your students to experience a little of this for themselves by comparing the careers of Drake and Raleigh and deciding who was the more historically significant.
This helps them to decide which portrait should ‘survive’ the rehang and remain sitting pretty in Room 2.
Of course, both portraits will always survive any rehang but don’t tell your students that!
